It's a classic argument in economics: If you can find a way to make a market, then that market will thrive. In economics, there's the so-called thomas law: If your prices are high, your prices will go up.If they're low, they will go down.If you're able to get prices to converge, you can create a market. This has been a cornerstone of the free market system since Adam Smith in the 17th century. But wh...
Yale University’s Sociopath class is not merely one of the most notorious of the country’s notorious schools of social work, but also one of its most widely acknowledged, the school’s President Peter Salovey said Tuesday.
The term is one that Saloveys is well known for, and one that he says has been used to describe Yale since the 1950s.
“Social institutions, I think, are not the worst thing in the world,” he said.
“It’s a terrible thing to be a social worker and it’s a really bad thing to not be a good social worker.”
The term was coined by a former Yale graduate and has been widely used for nearly three decades to describe the schools students who perform an array of duties in a professional environment, including social work and behavioral health, which Saloveies said are not necessarily the most appropriate for a college degree.
“I would say, for me, the most problematic thing in that whole field is the idea of being a social workers and not being a good one,” he told reporters.
“And that is what the word is meant to convey, which is, I do not know what it is you’re doing that is wrong.
It’s just not good.
That you’re not being trained, you don’t have training, you’re being taught something that you should be teaching and not doing, and you’re also being taught to do something that is not appropriate, something that I would call sociopathic.” “
That’s the real problem, that is the really, really big problem in this field of social worker.
That you’re not being trained, you don’t have training, you’re being taught something that you should be teaching and not doing, and you’re also being taught to do something that is not appropriate, something that I would call sociopathic.”
Saloveye was speaking at the American Sociological Association Annual Convention in Phoenix, Ariz., where he was joined by a host of other experts and guests.
“What the word social is, it means the people you meet, you meet people who have the social skills to do what you are trying to do,” he continued.
“In other words, that’s what social institutions are, and it is an extremely dangerous thing to say.”
Salveye added that he believes social institutions should be treated as a clinical disorder and that the term should be reserved for the ones most at risk of doing harm to others.
“We have the word sociopath, but it’s not a clinical diagnosis, it’s just a label, it is not the diagnosis of a disease, and I think that’s a good thing, I believe,” he added.
“There are many different kinds of pathology that people can have, and a very small number of them can cause great harm, including a very large number of those who have that diagnosis.”
