In 2018, the American Folklore Society announced that it would be launching a new national initiative to “provide a place for folklorists to share their cultural heritage and learn from other practitioners in the field.”
The organization said that its goal was to “reinvent folklorism by providing opportunities for practitioners to share the wisdom of their work with the broader public, and to develop a new generation of practitioners in fields such as history, literature, and folklore.”
As the organization announced, the new initiative would also be aimed at fostering a better understanding of the “natural history of the United States and the cultures that inhabit it.”
According to the organization, the mission of the Folklore Studies program is “to develop a foundation of knowledge in the areas of American and Western culture and history that can be applied to a wide range of cultural problems.”
In order to make this possible, the program is launching the Folklorists of America, a partnership with the Smithsonian Institution.
The Folklorist’s of America will be a new organization which will be dedicated to teaching folkloric history and folklore, as well as educating people about how the United State has historically celebrated and celebrated our roots.
In addition to being a national organization, Folklorism Studies will be funded by the Smithsonian’s National Endowment for the Humanities and will have a “national footprint.”
“The Smithsonian will be contributing a substantial portion of the funding for this program, with funding of up to $30,000,” the organization said.
The program will also feature an in-depth and educational program, featuring workshops and seminars, as part of the Smithsonian National Folklorological Park. “
As we work to build the Smithsonian Folklorology Institute, we’re committed to making the FolkLORH program a world-class institution,” the group said.
The program will also feature an in-depth and educational program, featuring workshops and seminars, as part of the Smithsonian National Folklorological Park.
To apply for membership, applicants will need to submit a letter of intent to the Smithsonian, and they must be between the ages of 18 and 55.
Folklorism is a very diverse field and many practitioners are involved in it.
In addition to the Folklovers of America and Folklore Study, the Smithsonian also announced that they will be adding a new program in the National Museum of Folklore and Folklife called the Folk Arts Program.
This new program will be focused on “the study of music and music culture in American folk traditions and in the United Kingdom and Europe.”
As the program continues, the museum’s curator of history and the director of the National Folklore Museum will serve as the program’s chair, with the program co-chairman being a member of the faculty.
It’s the second year in a row that the Smithsonian has launched a new initiative to offer funding to the preservation of American folk culture.
More to come.
